Eyelids
Step 1 - Primer
If you choose add primer and concealer to the eye area do this before any other eye makeup application. Add primer to your lids and let it dry.
Step 2 - EyeshadowEyeshadow colors can be classified as
Light
Medium
Dark
Many eyeshadow pallets come with the 3 or more shades in one tub.
Light – Apply the light shadow to the upper portion of your eyes, along the brow bone.Medium – The medium shade is used to color the actual lids. Apply to the inner corner and stroke to the outer edge of the eye lid.
Dark – This shade of eye makeup shadow is used to contour and add depth to the eyelids, and this eye makeup needs to be applied to the crease of the eyes. Beginning at the inner corner, follow the crease to the outer edge of your eyes. Dark shades are often used to create the smoky eyes affect.

- Blend, blend, blend! The best tip in how to apply eye makeup is to make sure to always create as natural a look as possible, so always make sure to blend the eyeshadow well, and never leave pronounced and jagged lines.
Eyeliner
Eyeliner can be tricky, but some practice can really go along way in learning how to apply eyeliner eye makeup effectively. Eyeliner can be added all around the eyes, under the bottom eye lash line, on top of the lid, just at the lash line, or even on the inside of the inner bottom of the eyes.
Create Wider Eyes with Liner
To make narrow eyes appear wider, apply the eyeliner ¼ of the way out from the inner corners with the beginning line being very thin and then growing slightly wider toward the edge.
Make Wide Eyes Closer with Liner
To make extremely wide set eyes appear closer, apply a slight amount of the darkest shade of shadow just near the inner corners of each lid and begin your eyeliner right at the inner edges of your lash line.
Give More Depth to Big Eyes with Liner
Add eyeliner to the inside of the lower lid.
Add liner all around the eye and blend well.
Eyeliner Tips
- Once again, blend, blend and blend again! The more blended the line of the liner, the better it looks, jagged, overly defined lines don't look too good.
- Add a layer of your dark shadow over the liner, and blend, this really provides for a natural, and still dramatic look.
- Use eyeliner appropriately, and don't over do it, applying too thick or a glaring eyeliner line will create the clown affect. Also, consider where you are going, super dark and dramatic liner might look great at the dance club on Saturday night but not at the office on Monday morning.
Mascara
The last step in applying eye makeup is the mascara. The amount of applications to get the desired affect from mascara depends on the mascara product you use and the actual look of your own lashes. Sometimes, with a really good mascara, like the MAC mascara products, one application will achieve the affect your want, and sometimes you will have to apply a couple of strokes. Start with one, and see what you get, if you need another layer, go ahead, but it's best to add secondary layers while the first is still wet, don't wait till it dries. Another option is to use an eyelash curler. Learn more at MAC mascara products guide.
